This will be done using a number of handmade tools such as flax brakes, scutchers, and hackles, as well as West African-inspired narrow strip looms made from pollarded willow poles and plant cordage.
Flax Exchange is led by Artist Shane Waltener whose creative practice draws inspiration from ceramics, textiles and basketry. His work is rooted in ideas of ecology and reuse. Working in participatory settings he aims for the making of objects, installations and performances to facilitate skill exchanges and with this, the exchange of the cultural and social histories that relate to craft.
You will be processing flax and other bast fibres, spinning, dying, weaving, knitting, crocheting, upcycling and remaking, singing, recording and moving.
Alongside Shane, Flax exchange will be hosting a series of textiles practitioners who will co-lead sessions (dates tbc).
