Award-winning emerging designer Mabel Hasell draws her inspiration from the colours and cuts of gemstones. Her jewellery puts a modern twist on stone setting; she creates the pieces in wax and through the process of lost wax casting the gems move and cluster together in the molten metal. They appear in unexpected positions, imprints of the gems remain where they were originally placed and their movements become integrated in the final design. This approach allows her to create unorthodox pieces that embrace the vibrant gemstones even more so than just setting them traditionally. Made from silver and 18ct gold - each piece is unique.
Mabel has been awarded several prizes, including the Best Emerging Jewellery Designer e-Creative 2010/11 Award and the Goldsmiths' Company Precious Metal Bursary Award. Her work is available at Brazen Studios in Glasgow and Jewel Thief Gallery in Brighton. Also keep checking her website for regular updates on upcoming shows.
