Tartan: Its Journey through the African Diaspora

Date: 5 August 2014 to 30 August 2014
Opening Times: 10am-6pm daily
Location: The Gallery, Craft Central, 33-35 St John's Square, London EC1M 4DS

The exhibition tells the story of how tartan travelled around the world and through its influence led to aspects of material culture being developed in certain parts of Africa and the Diaspora. The first major project from CIAD (Costume Institute of the African Diaspora) looks at how these cultures adapted, adopted or absorbed this influence to bring significance to fabrics such as madras cloth.

Our journey’s story travels to Scotland, Kenya  South Africa and various countries within the Caribbean passing through India, and quickly docking in the USA along the way. This enables us to map out a broad picture of how the development of these patterns have come to influence the economic, cultural and social developments in these countries/regions.

Barbara Yarde brings her handmade jewellery to the summer pop up shop at Craft Central in Clerkenwell, providing a unique shopping experience for jewellery lovers.
My bespoke jewellery has been inspired by my travels and everyday life. I have taken inspiration from places such as India, Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Gardens in Marrakesh, The Valley of the Queens in Luxor and museums and galleries in London.
Each piece is made in my workshop in London, incorporating different ideas taken from my travels.  I use mainly sterling silver, plated in 18ct gold, and a variety of techniques combining this precious metal with traditional processes,  such as wax carving, Keum- Boo (fine gold fusing) and reticulation,  which have allowed me to create timeless pieces that will be returned to time and time again.
