A Snatched Last Kiss

Date: 25 April 2016 to 01 May 2016
Opening Times: Mon (Private View) 6-9pm; Tue-Fri 10:30am-6pm; Sat & Sun 11am-5pm
Location: The Showcase, 33-35 St John Square, Clerkenwell, London, EC1M 4DS

Weaver Ali Holloway is showing a collection of woven pieces made in response to the letters of her Great Great grandfather Frederick Desnaux, a merchant trader, written to his wife Helen in 1869 as he sailed from Liverpool to West Africa. While travelling he wrote fond and hopeful letters made all the more poignant by the fact that this was to be his final journey, he never returned home as he died in Freetown, Sierra Leone of dysentery.

This exhibition brings their story back to Clerkenwell, where it first began. Helen was born and brought up there, she was christened (as was their daughter Georgina) at St James Church in Clerkenwell Green and she and Freddie were then married there.

Weaving in old maps and fragments of clothing and lace owned by Helen and Georgina and taking inspiration from the strip woven textiles of West Africa Ali Holloway tells a story of a journey, of love, loss and the threads that connect across time.

This project has been funded by a bursary from Jameson Works.

Celebration Of Craftsmanship & Design

Opening Times: Tue-Sat 12 - 7pm
Location: Craft Central, 33-35 St John's Square, Clerkenwell, London, EC1M 4DS

Meet exceptional contemporary furniture makers from across the UK that are usually hidden from view.

This exhibition of 35 pieces of bespoke furniture offers a glimpse into 21 small, outstanding, yet often overlooked workshops
of master craftsmen and women from Glasgow to the Isle of Wight. It represents a rare opportunity in London to discover and buy
the unique work of so many diverse furniture designer-makers.

Meet the Makers: On Tuesday 3rd May, the designer-makers behind the exhibits gather to share the inspiration behind their work,
exploring how it was made and why commissioning a cabinet-maker to design a piece, especially for you, is so much more enjoyable,
interesting and fulfilling than buying off the shelf.

Malcolm Morris is a designer and maker of silver, gold & diamond jewellery. His current collection, with its flowing, organic lines, has been inspired by Morphology; the study of organism shape and form.

Kerstin Haigh makes cast & enamelled jewellery, bowls and objects. Her collection focus's on collected stories and observations. Using precious and non-precious materials, Kerstin creates charming, curious art to symbolise the celestial sphere, the natural world and human experience.

Rubi Warren is a collection of hand crafted gemstone jewellery created by designer-maker Chrissi Harcourt-Wood; crafted in silver and gold with gemstones selected for both their beauty and energetic vibration.

Beth Slayden's silver jewellery is inspired by familiar and everyday objects like plants, buildings or sculpture, things that give us a sense of connection with our environment. Using fluid lines observed in nature, her botanically themed work has a tactile form and structure.
